HEAD BANGER VOTED BEST MOVIE SONG OF ALL TIME
Queen has confirmed their legendary status, as Bohemian Rhapsody has been voted the best song from a movie. The anthem from ‘Wayne’s World’, was one of two Queen hits to feature in the top ten. The poll, which surveyed 3,000 people was compiled by British Airways to coincide with its Rooftop Film Club event this summer.
Tear-jerkers made up half of the top ten, including Unchained melody from Ghost, Wind beneath my wings from Beaches, and My heart will go on from Titanic. Actress Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones who names the Celine Dion classic as her favourite song from film, said: “It’s a film I grew up with and every time I think of it, I think of Leonardo di Caprio!”
Idinia Menzel’s blockbuster hit Let it go from Disney’s Frozen was voted the most popular song by under 24 year olds. Presenter Denise Van Outen, who also nominated it, said: “It’s the perfect sing-a-long song for people of all ages. My daughter Betsy knows every word, and I have to confess, so do I!"

Time of My Life from chick flick ‘Dirty Dancing’ topped the female vote, while Eye of the Tiger from ‘Rocky III’ won the male vote, including football pundit Chris Kamara, who said: “I cannot pass a flight of stone steps in the great outdoors without wanting to run up and punch the air like my idol Rocky Balboa!”
Belters from James Bond films appeared three times in the overall top 50, including ‘Wings’ Live and Let Die and Carly Simon’s Nobody does it better – a favourite of presenter Professor Brian Cox, who said: “I was on holiday in Llandudno in North Wales in 1977 and my Dad took me to see the Bond film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’.
“The film starts with Roger Moore in a bright yellow suit skiing off a cliff and opening a union jack parachute, followed by the best Bond theme of all time, Nobody Does it Better. It still sends tingles down the spine to this day!"
Rooftop Film Club founder Gerry Cottle Jnr, said “Music and film are explicably linked and the soundtrack to a good film can transport you to another place and time. Some of the most popular films we show have rousing soundtracks that engage with viewers. And for the record - Frankie Valli’s Grease is the word gets my vote!”
Other popular songs chosen by well-known personalities include Born Slippy from ‘Trainspotting’ voted by Kiss FM’s Charlie Hedges, Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ from the same film, by Emma Willis, A Real Hero by College and Electric Youth from ‘Drive’ by comedian Alexander Armstrong, Show me how you burlesque by Christina Aguilera from ‘Burlesque’ voted by TLC star Charlotte Crosby and Eminem’s ‘8 Mile’ from the film with the same name, voted by golfer Justin Rose.
Amanda Berry, film aficionado and CEO of BAFTA, revealed Moon River from ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ as her favourite track, saying: “I cannot think of the film without thinking about the song, and vice versa. The lyrics, a mere handful of lines, and music come together to create movie magic!”
Rooftop Film Club presented by British Airways runs until the end of September, with outdoor screens in Hoxton and Peckham, London. From new releases to classic hits, the pop-up film event is showing a number of films featured in the list including; Trainspotting, Romeo + Juliet, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Grease 2, Top Gun and The Breakfast Club – all showing this June.
